Watch TV for the planet

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Well green certainly is becoming the new black as I noted in a previous post. Not only are Australian publishers producing more green themed publications but television networks are also getting involved. An upcoming Network 10 program is asking Australians to go on a carbon diet to help save the Planet. The program COOL AID: The National Carbon Test will highlight how all Australians can act on global warming. The show will feature four Aussie celebrity families plus provide ways for viewers to calculate their household’s carbon emissions. Cool Aid airs on Network Ten, Sunday, March 4 at 8.30pm. The ABC is producing a series called Carbon Cops where environmental scientists help six Melbourne families determine their carbon output. In April SBS will release Eco House Challenge where eco coach Tanya Ha assists two families produce a more sustainable footprint. Cable TV channel Sky News is also launching a new environmental program this weekend called Eco Report. I was lucky enough to be involved in one of the segments, so check it out if you can.

Local editor raves on with ignorant bulldust

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Right, this post is going to be a bit of a rant but I am feeling pretty wound up! My local paper is running this headline: “Global Warming Bulldust Stirs up a Readers’ Storm!”? Shocking, I know but it then goes on to say: “Global Warming Loonies Rave on with Bulldust.”

The first three paragraphs are even more offensive saying: “Can you believe the number of raving loonies we’ve brought out of the woodwork with their crazy fanciful notions of the end is nigh because of global warming and climate change! I didn’t realise we had such a percentage of off-the-planet readers among our normally mature and highly intelligent readership. Looks like we’ll have to introduce a comics section and horoscope page to meet their insatiable appetite for the weird and wonderful…” (more…)

How to plant and cultivate chickens

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

chook_dome.jpgA friend at work has built himself a chook dome . This produces a generous amount of eggs for his family and work colleagues (the lucky ones) plus loads of excellent fertiliser for his garden.

Matthew has kindly provided Greenfoot with his tips for cultivating chickens. (more…)

Goodbye inefficient light bulbs

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Could the humble incandescent light bulb be on its way to extinction? The Federal government is proposing to phase out inefficient light bulbs to help battle climate change. This would mean incandescent light bulbs being replaced by compact fluorescents. Read the full story on the SMH website. Also check out the breakdown of energy use between incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs - the difference means a very substantial saving.

Walking the talk

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

There are loads of ways we can all take action to lessen our footprint on the earth. Many of us are reducing our water consumption, buying green power, retrofitting our homes or recycling food scraps and packaging.

However, one young woman has come up with the novel idea of walking from Sydney to Brisbane to raise awareness about global warming.

Sarah Bishop is 22 and has already left Sydney. She plans to arrive in Brisbane for Earth Hour on March 31. She says she was inspired by the film An Inconvenient Truth and Tim Flannery’s book The Weather Makers. Check out her website or read an interview with her on WWF’s website.

Melbourne sustainability festival

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

thong.jpgIf you’re in Melbourne this weekend check out the Sustainable Living Festival at Federation Square in the city.

The three day festival (Feb 16-18) focuses on social and ecological sustainability with loads of interactive displays, demonstrations, artworks, exhibits, designs, films, multimedia and live performances. The theme for this year is: how do you do it? It looks pretty good. Being a Sydney-sider I won’t be there but if anyone goes please comment on what it was like. Watch the promo video on YouTube.

Pink Floyd switches off

Friday, February 9th, 2007

This is one of the best film clips, and not to mention remixes, that I have seen and heard in a while. It also has an excellent message. View the video on YouTube.

Angry kid is not quite as uplifting but again, an excellent and powerful message - one that makes me think about the world my two year old son is inheriting.

Climate change goes mainstream

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

I moved back to Australia about five years ago and the topic of climate change still seemed like a left-wing theory that mainstream media and politics couldn’t agree on.

However, in the last year it seems climate change is the hot topic of global reports, scientific findings, media stories and politicians. Of course climate change has been a major issue for decades but finally it seems that the world is agreeing that climate change is real.

Environment groups have been campaigning about climate change for eons but what I find interesting is that mainstream media outlets are now helping to spread the climate change message. (more…)

Follow the stars when buying appliances

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

energy_star_label.jpgI have just finished writing an article on buying energy wise appliances. Basically, all white goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners) must have an energy efficiency label.

It’s pretty simple stuff really - the more stars on the label, the more energy efficient. But did you know that by improving your appliance by just one star you can save between 10 and 30per cent on your running costs, and loads of greenhouse gas emissions? Check out my article for more information.
